Student Life
The student life in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Governor Livingston high school is characterized by a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere that empowers students to thrive academically, socially, and personally. By providing tailored support and a vibrant community, the program ensures that every student can reach their full potential and enjoy a fulfilling high school experience.
GL Deaf Highlander Club
Highlander pride and a desire to increase the overall awareness of Deaf culture prompted the establishment of this Deaf Highlander Club. Membership is open to all Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at Governor Livingston. This student-led club, with the support of its advisors, sponsors Deaf awareness events and activities throughout the school year. Fundraising efforts allow club members to host guest speakers and participate in educationally based field trips.
American Sign Language Honor Society
GLHS is proud to offer three years of ASL as a World Language. Classes are open to all students: Deaf, Hearing, and Hard of Hearing. American Sign Language students may also participate in the national ASL Honor Society. This program was established in 2006 as a means to encourage and recognize those who have achieved a high level of academic success in their American Sign Language studies.
American Sign Language Club
The American Sign Language club focuses on cooperation, friendship, information exchange, involvement, tolerance towards others, and leadership skills. Members participate in varied activities such as silent lunches, social events/celebrations, signing & yoga, game days, fundraisers, and participation in a new partnership with Kean University's ASL classes. Skills and experiences obtained by club members during these meetings/events enable them to practice their signing skills and promote a fusion between deaf and hearing students. The ASL club is open to all students. You do not need to take ASL to be a member of the club. We meet monthly during lunchtime to socialize and plan events.

"I enjoy being at GL because I am able to communicate with the hearing and DHH students. Not only can I communicate with the students: there are many teachers, coaches and staff members who also try to learn ASL so that school will be a more enjoyable environment for everyone. GL has a lot of activities and gives the DHH a great opportunity to succeed when we graduate."
